Arlington Dentist: What to Expect

September 30, 2019

We visit the dentist regularly to protect and treat our oral health. Each visit is unique and can include a variety of treatments. Typically, patients visit the dentist for exams and cleanings. Additional treatments such as fillings, crowns, implants, and more are performed as recommended. If you have not been to the dentist in a while, read more below. This information will help you be prepared for your first visit.

Before the Appointment

We recommend completing paperwork before your appointment to expedite your visit. Additionally, arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment. This offers you time to inquire about any insurance or treatment details. Also, being early can help you avoid feeling anxious about arriving on time and finding parking.

Routine Dentist Visit

Your first visit is likely to include a dental exam to understand your current oral health. Dental X-rays may be required to evaluate any underlying issue. Next, the dentist may check for pockets or gaps between your teeth and gums. A tool called a periodontal probe will help the dentist to find any problem spots. In addition, the dentist will review your medical history and share any findings and treatment recommendations.

Afterward, a dental cleaning may be completed on the same visit or scheduled at a later date. The procedure is simple and painless. The dentist will cover your chest with a plastic or paper cloth. Next, tools are used to remove tartar and plaque from teeth and the gum line. Once finished, you will rinse and the dentist will share dental hygiene tips to help you maintain a healthier smile.

Dental Care

Visiting the dentist is essential. We recommend doing so every six months. Additionally, brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. At-home care is just as important to maintain a healthy smile. In fact, preventive care protects your smile from dental emergencies, decay, periodontal disease, and tooth loss. We also recommend eating a healthy diet and avoiding tobacco.

Each patient is different and may be recommended other forms of care to improve their dental health. For example, some may need additional exams and cleanings. While others may need more treatments such as scaling and root planing to improve their smile. For this reason, we highly recommend visiting the dentist to learn about your current oral health and the necessary steps to improve it. Oftentimes, there are underlying issues that patients are not aware of until they meet with the dentist.
