In-Office Teeth Whitening vs at-home Teeth whitening

August 31, 2019

Professional teeth whitening enhances your smile up to 8 shades. Essentially, it removes years of stains and discoloration. Teeth whitening can either be undertaken at home or under the supervision of a dentist, which is also referred to as in-office.

In-office teeth whitening is the professional procedure performed by a qualified dentist to get rid of stains and teeth discoloration. The process has, over the years, gained popularity across the board, especially to those who do not find refuge in over the counter and home tooth whitening remedies. Home remedies generally have a reduced rate of success, a factor steaming from lack of professional knowledge, use of wrong tools, and inability to follow the required steps. Having the procedure undertaken by a qualified and experienced dentist guarantees to achieve the intended goal.

Enhance your smile

In-office teeth whitening is essential in achieving an intended shade of the teeth, usually returning the teeth to its natural and original color away from stains, plaque, and discolorations. A successful tooth whitening procedure helps one regain their self-confidence and maintain a beautiful smile. Setting off the in-office teeth whitening procedure is a thorough dental examination and history taking by the dentist. The history-taking process involves the dentist probing to establish the causative factor for the teeth staining and or discoloration. The dentist may also take a photograph of your dental set, which will aid in follow-up and, evaluation and monitoring of the progress. The dentist will then explain to you what the procedure entails, setting the stage for teeth whitening.

What does the treatment entail?

Most common in-office teeth whitening procedures make use of custom-made trays filled with teeth bleaching solutions made to fit the affected tooth or teeth. The most common bleaching agents in use are either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide.

The first step is to polish the teeth with pumice, a material designed to remove stains and plaque from the teeth’s surface. Next, the dentist isolates the patient’s mouth with sterile gauze or retractors.

Once everything is separated and secured against the bleaching solution, the dentist carefully applies the solution only on the front surface of the teeth. The doctor leaves the solution, at times activated by a laser or curing light, on top of the teeth for between 30 to 60 minutes. Occasionally, the dentist may reapply the solution depending on the results. Once complete, the solution is removed from the teeth and the patient can examine their new smile.
