Wisdom teeth are the four molars located in the back corners of your mouth. If they don’t have room to grow, they can cause a variety of dental issues, including pain and infection- which means they need to be extracted.
During your initial consultation with our dental team, we’ll explain your options for sedation, and you can decide if you want a local anesthetic or if you would prefer to be fully sedated. Most of our patients choose full sedation. If you do, you’ll want to make sure that you have someone with you that can drive you home afterwards.
On the day of the procedure, you will be taken to the treatment room, where we will administer the necessary sedation and fully numb the area around the tooth or teeth that need to be extracted. Then, before you know it, the problematic wisdom teeth will be gone and you will be waking up.
When you have any type of surgery, you can expect a recovery period. Typically, recovery following wisdom tooth extraction takes a few days. You will be prescribed pain medications to keep you comfortable during your recovery. We will also give you instructions to ensure that your recovery goes smoothly, and you avoid complications.
Wisdom teeth usually come in around late adolescence anywhere between ages 15 and 25. If your wisdom teeth haven’t come in yet, we can examine them using X-rays to see if they are likely to cause damage when they erupt and perform an early removal.
A: Please stick to a soft-food diet for a few days following your procedure. The extraction site will be sensitive, so it’s important to consume foods that won’t agitate the area. When eating or drinking after your procedure, please make sure to avoid using straws as these can cause dry socket and prolong the healing process.
