What are Snap-On Dentures?

Traditional dentures depend on your gums and jawbone for support. This method has been used for many years to replace all missing upper or lower teeth. Over the years, there have been improvements in materials and patients have achieved improved results. While modern traditional dentures look and function better than those in the past, there are still some disadvantages:

  • Diminished bite force
  • Continued bone loss
  • Denture movement during eating and speaking
  • Inability to chew harder foods
  • Impaired nutrition (due to inability to chew)
  • Frequent adjustments and replacements required
  • Sagging facial muscles

When you come in for your consultation, discuss these pros and cons with the team at Arlington Dental Excellence. We can help you with other options if you decide that snap-on dentures are not for you, or if you decide you want to, we can guide you in moving forward with this treatment.

What is the process for getting snap-on dentures?

The first thing you will do is have your initial consultation with Dr. Jureidini and the staff at Arlington Dental Excellence. This is the time when you will ask any questions and address any concerns. This is also the time that the cost and financing options will be discussed.

Next, if you decide to move forward with this tooth restoration treatment, if you have any extractions or bone grafting needs, those will be done.

Once you heal from those, the implants will be placed. You will be given a temporary plate while you heal from this surgery.

Finally, once you have healed, your permanent plate will be attached, and you will be instructed on how to take care of it. All along the way, with each stage, you will be given aftercare instructions. Make sure to follow them to reduce the risk of implant failure.

FAQs about Tooth Implants

Below are a few frequently asked questions about tooth implants:

A: Tooth implants are titanium posts that are surgically implanted into the jawbone. the implant fuses with the jawbone, which creates a foundation like a tooth root. Once the implant has fused with the bone, a prosthetic tooth will be attached.

A:

  • They are durable and long-term with a high success rate
  • They look, feel, and function like natural teeth
  • They are fixed, so no slipping/sliding around or falling out
  • Affect only the missing tooth
  • Most patients are happy and enjoy improved oral health

A: While we described the procedure in detail above, it's pretty simple. An implant is placed in the gum and allowed time to fuse with the jawbone. Once that is done, a prosthetic tooth is attached. Though the process is simple-you must be patient because it takes time. In most cases, it will take about 4 months from beginning to end. However, if there are complications, such as extractions or bone grafts, some patients may need a year or more to complete the process.

A: Most patients only have mild to moderate discomfort/pain following the surgery that is easily managed with medications.

A: Yes- the titanium post and the prosthetic tooth are both 100% safe.

A: If you are in good health overall and you have good bone density, you should be a good fit for tooth implants. The only way to know for sure is to schedule your consultation and go through a thorough exam and evaluation.

A: If you are not a good candidate for tooth implants, Arlington Dental Excellence offers treatments that may help you get implants in the future. However, if you can't undergo those procedures, there are other tooth restoration options, including dentures and bridges.
